1996 fällt Afghanistan an die radikalislamischen Taliban: Am 26./27. September 1996 erobern sie die Hauptstadt Kabul, vertreiben Präsident Burhanuddin Rabbani und Kommandeur Ahmed Schah Massoud in den Norden und errichten ein striktes Scharia-Regime. Zu ihren ersten Taten gehört die Ergreifung und öffentliche Hinrichtung des früheren kommunistischen Präsidenten Mohammed Nadschibullah. Bis Jahresende kontrollieren die Taliban über zwei Drittel des Landes; Massouds Nordallianz formiert den Widerstand.

Afghanistan, officially the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, is a landlocked country located at the crossroads of Central and South Asia. It is bordered by Pakistan to the east and south, Iran to the west, Turkmenistan to the northwest, Uzbekistan to the north, Tajikistan to the northeast, and China to the northeast and east.
